Reports of the body called the British Lung Foundation declared an 'alarming lack of connection' between the public's perception of drugs that are considered safe and 'serious impact, which can be fatal even owned the drug'. In detail, noted that nearly 9 out of 10 people think smoking tobacco is more harmful to health than smoking marijuana. In its report, the charity also attach the available scientific evidence related to the health effects of smoking marijuana. Strong evidence was also shown that smoking marijuana can indeed contribute to the emergence of diseases related to the respiratory system, including lung cancer, tuberculosis and acute bronchitis.
Smoking marijuana also 'strongly associated' with the emphasis on the immune system and heart disease if consumed over a long time. "Young people who smoke marijuana do not realize that each cigarette they smoke marijuana increases the chance of developing lung cancer as much as 20 tobacco cigarettes," said chief executive of the British Lung Foundation, Dame Helena Shovelton as reported by The Telegraph on Thursday (07/06/2012). "This is not a trivial problem because marijuana is one of the recreational drug most widely used in the UK with nearly a third of the population has tried it," he added. Not only making the report, the charity is also calling for a campaign to raise awareness of the long-term effects of smoking marijuana on health.
